Land

Canaan & Israel

The land bridge between Egypt and Mesopotamia where most of the biblical story takes place.

What the sources say, and how sure we are

  • The text says

The land promised to Abraham’s descendants is called Canaan, and later Israel and Judah.Gen 12:7; Num 34:1–12

  • Outside evidence

The land lies on the main routes between Egypt and Mesopotamia, so armies and traders crossed it. Its terrain runs in north–south bands: coastal plain, central hill country, Jordan Valley, and the highlands east of the Jordan, with the Negev desert to the south.

  • Debated

The borders of the promised land are described differently in different passages (compare Gen 15:18 with Num 34), and scholars disagree about how they relate to the borders Israel actually held.Gen 15:18–21; Num 34:1–12

Why geography matters here

Most of Israel’s hill-country towns had little farmland and depended on seasonal rain, while the coast and the great roads gave access to trade and invasion. Many stories in the Bible make more sense once you see where they happen.
